Code of conduct

Calgary UX expects all participants to behave respectfully, collaboratively, and avoid demeaning or harassing behavior. Immediate reporting of any unacceptable behavior is crucial, and all reports will be handled confidentially with appropriate actions to ensure safety. This code applies to both physical and online interactions, and Calgary UX reserves the right to address violations even if they occur outside events or during legal proceedings.

Participants are urged to maintain a friendly and safe environment at all venues and related social events. This commitment extends to preventing discrimination based on gender, identity, orientation, disability, race, ethnicity, age, and religion. Our code broadly outlines prohibited conduct to guide behavior rather than list all forms of misconduct exhaustively.

Unacceptable behaviours include intimidation, harassment, discriminatory remarks, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention. These behaviours are forbidden at our venues, shared with the public, and must be reported if observed.

Consequences for such behaviours may involve resolution processes that prioritize our guiding principles over and above civil or criminal proceedings. Unintentional violations may be addressed through education, while predatory behavior will result in immediate expulsion.

If you experience or witness unacceptable behaviour, contact Calgary UX staff for a confidential and effective response. Retaliation against individuals reporting violations is strictly prohibited and will lead to immediate removal from the community.

Our policies also cover online interactions and digital communication, emphasizing professionalism and respect in forums like Slack and Zoom. Violations online will be met with appropriate disciplinary action.

Calgary UX expects high standards of integrity and respect in all interactions to foster a positive community environment. We emphasize a safe, welcoming atmosphere conducive to learning and networking. We invite feedback and constructive criticism within the community, handled with discretion to ensure a respectful engagement for all members.

Land acknowledgement

We acknowledge that the Calgary area where the Bow and Elbow rivers meet is a place of confluence where the sharing of ideas and opportunities naturally occurs. Indigenous peoples have their own names for this area that were in use long before Scottish settlers named it Calgary

The Métis call the Calgary area Otos-kwunee. In the Blackfoot language, they call this place, Moh-kins-tsis. The Stoney Nakoda Nation refer to the Calgary area as Wîchîspa Oyade and the people of the Tsuut’ina nation call this area Guts-ists-i. We would like to acknowledge that we are located on the traditional territories of the people of the Treaty 7 Region in Southern Alberta.

This includes the Siksika, Piikani, and Kainai, collectively known as the Blackfoot Confederacy; the Îethka Nakoda Wîcastabi First Nations, comprised of the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Wesley First Nations; and the Tsuut’ina First Nation. The City of Calgary is also the homeland of the historic Northwest Métis and the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3. We acknowledge all Indigenous urban Calgarians, First Nations, Inuit, and Métis who have made Calgary their home.
